Born in 1951 in Miami, Florida, William Wolk began drawing free-hand charcoal portraits at age eight. By age nine, he was working diligently in oils. At age seventeen, he spent one year in drawing study at the Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. At eighteen, Wolk moved to Florence, Italy to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. The total absence of a teacher or any instruction at the Academy spurred Wolk on to a year of self-study in the city's museums and churches. Upon his return to the United States, Wolk had his first one man show in Coral Gables, Florida at age nineteen.
